Community
We build our Community Art projects based on respect, empowerment, open participation and dialogue.
We aim to foster diversity and sustainability in our practice and the key to our mission is to break down barriers to inclusion, bringing the positive healing power of Art and creative practice to all communities on Merseyside and beyond!
For over 20 years, the team have collaborated across private, public and voluntary sectors to support Liverpool’s cultural offer through community initiatives and outreach programmes.
The Hope Street Shivers tour was established in 2005, as the first street theatre activity of its kind on Merseyside and was described as ‘trail-blazing’ by former head of the Merseyside Partnership, Pam Wilsher. The team have twice won Tourism Experience of the Year and Independent Tourism Business of the Year at the regional LCR awards and scooped Best Guided Walk in England, at the coveted National Visit England Ceremony.
Special mentions were made by awarding bodies re the impact with emphasis on improving the safety of local communities, particularly in the evenings. VE assessors commented on the excellent approach to ‘pastoral care’ and the effective development of soft-skills of Young Guides that ‘went above and beyond industry standards’ awarding one of the highest marks of 93%.
It can be often on the walking tours where ideas may spark and we are invited into different communities to explore potential project work. This may involve things like how to research individual stories of family members past deeds or bring a focus to specific events that have impacted their individual lives.
We use what we hear from participants, audience members, freelancers, other practitioners, the wider community alongside our own observations as residents to shape and evolve our offer.
We work alongside Liverpool City Council Purple Flag Street-Scene, local Police and BID teams and our evening walking tour activities serve as a community lighthouse acting as a ‘reassuring on-street presence’
